April, 2005 Your Board of Supervisors disregarded your property rights!
On March 15th, your Board of Supervisors, by a unanimous vote, approved the Pebble Beach Company’s development of the Lower Sawmill scenic and conservation easement site for a new commercial equestrian center. By this vote they radically changed your neighborhood environment. The new equestrian center includes the development of a massive commercial equestrian center on the Upper Sawmill site and provisions on the Lower Sawmill site for significant special equestrian event activities. There will be high intensity use for more than fifty days a year. In addition, there will be special event parking of hundreds of cars for the AT&T Golf Tournament, Concourse D’elegance, etc. Your neighborhood will be transformed from a quiet residential area to one adjacent to heavy traffic, large vehicles, noise, dirt, temporary show arenas, hundreds of cars and a significant number of large busses to transport spectators to and from special events sites in the Forest. What can be done about the supervisors action? Your neighborhood’s future now rests with the California Coastal Commission. The new equestrian center cannot be built if the Coastal Commission refuses to approve modification of their Upper Sawmill scenic and conservation easement. This easement, like the one on the Lower Sawmill site, was placed there as a condition for approval of the Pebble Beach Company’s Spanish Bay Resort development 20 years ago. The Coastal Commission staff says this easement is irrevocable. The written document says it’s irrevocable. Yet, the Pebble Beach Company wants to change it. Remember, your supervisors had a solemn obligation to uphold the Lower Sawmill scenic easement agreement they and the Pebble Beach Company willingly entered into 20 years ago. To your detriment, neither the supervisors nor the Pebble Beach Company upheld their end of the bargain. The California Coastal Commission is your last, best hope for the future of your neighborhood. Ask the Coastal Commission to keep the scenic easement as is. Make your voice heard to prevent this travesty. Please send your comments to:
